Volunteering

Volunteers are an integral part of The Burrough Harmony Centre.

People choose to volunteer for a variety of reasons. For some, volunteering with us offers the chance to give something back to the Bridport community and make a real difference to local people. For others, it provides an opportunity to develop new skills, or build on existing experience and knowledge. Regardless of the motivation, what unites them all is that people find volunteering rewarding.

Harmony benefits from the wide range of expertise, skills and knowledge that volunteers bring to our services, whether it is arts and crafts, cookery, leading a meditation session, individual support or administration support.

We believe everyone can contribute; some of our volunteers have lived experience of mental ill health, so truly understand why we do the work we do. Each and every one of our volunteers plays an important part in supporting people to live their best life.

What's it like volunteering with Harmony?

Volunteering at the Burrough Harmony Centre – Rob

“I hadn’t worked for seventeen years and was hoping to get into the mental health profession. I was introduced to Harmony through the START team in Bridport. I decided to volunteer to build my confidence and experience, so I approached Harmony and was then taken on as a volunteer in the Drop-in Service and its allotment, and then in the CFR (Community Front Rooms crisis service) after that. I felt very passionate towards Harmony and the CFR and so decided to apply for my first part time job as a Peer Support Specialist when the chance came up. I got the job and I’m also still volunteering for the Drop-in because I still enjoy the benefits of that role. It’s a good feeling being able to give mental health support to the community.

There’s a very nice feeling at Harmony. Getting to know the visitors has given me the ability to assess and work effectively with people with more confidence. Working here has improved my social skills and communication skills. It’s been a great experience getting to work as a member of a team again. The team is like a well-oiled machine. It has a nice, comfortable family feel to it. It’s a team made up of people with very varied life experiences and nobody’s go the same story. And we all bring something different to the table. There’s a great level of support given and lots of training is available.

Harmony has also inspired me and given me the opportunity to run the new men’s mental health walking group. It’s great to be able to offer support to men with varying degrees of mental health issues, as well as those without, through countryside walking.”
