Did you know?

Carer’s of people who are experiencing mental health issues provide invaluable support and help to them and to the rest of their families and loved ones. Their own emotional/physical well-being can quite often become neglected which in turn can have a negative effect on their own mental health.
  • 1.5 million carers in the UK look after someone with a mental health condition. Caring can be a rewarding and fulfilling experience, but it does present particular challenges
  • 71% of carers have poor physical or mental health
  • Carers UK’s annual survey with over 5,000 carers across the UK revealed that 84% of carers feel more stressed, 78% feel more anxious and 55% reported that they suffered from depression as a result of their caring role, which was higher than findings in previous years
  • Caring can affect a person’s ability to work, socialise, look after yourself and live fully day-to-day. Caring can put strain on an individual’s finances, especially if the carer has to give up paid employment. It can also lead to social isolation, and 87% carers feel that it undermines their own mental health
It is essential that Carers look after themselves and it has been shown that joining a group and getting Peer Support from others who have similar experiences is a very effective way of maintaining wellbeing. A better supported Carer provides better support.
